10 Things You NEED to know before you go wedding dress shopping

1. Do Your Wedding Day Research

Knowing your wedding date, wedding venue, and vibe are a MUST before finding your dream dress. It will completely shape the way you shop. Many brides have envisioned their wedding dress since childhood, but narrowing that vision into a shortlist helps you avoid overwhelm. Whether it's something romantic, elegant, glamorous, classic, daring, or effortless you're searching for, knowing these key details before you step into your appointment will make the process more seamless. Set realistic parameters on what you can comfortably financially invest into your dream bridal look and communicate that with your bridal stylists so that they can provide personalized guidance, and curated bridal appointments can help tailor the search to your vision and budget. Knowing your wedding date will also dictate the type of gown we shop for: consider breathable fabrics for summer weddings or detachable sleeves for a fall wedding.

2. Bring the "Right" Crew

Who you bring to your shopping appointment as you search for bridal gowns can make or break your experience. Opt for guests who understand and respect your personal style. Bring guests who will speak positively and help enhance this experience for you. Guests who lean towards criticism, negativity, and jealousy should probably sit this one out.

3. Don’t Overbook Yourself

Maximize at 1 or 2 Bridal Appointments. Decision fatigue is a real thing. Shortlist dresses before your appointments to keep shopping focused. Trying on dozens of wedding dresses is not only physically, mentally, and emotionally exhausting for you and your party, but at some point, it stops being fun and starts feeling like work. Overbooking yourself usually takes the magic out of the experience.

4. Focus on finding the dream dress YOU love most.

Choosing your wedding gown for anyone other than yourself is the fastest path to regret. We can honor the vision your loved ones had for you for a moment, and then move onto choosing what you love and feel most beautiful in, and want to wear for your special day. For bride's with ultra opinionated parties, we suggest shopping alone to eliminate worry. Bring your guests back for a first look at final reveal once you've found what you love.

5. Look The Part as You Try On Bridal Gowns

Wear your hair and makeup similar to how you might do so on the big day. Feeling confident in yourself and highlighting your best features is more important than you might realize. There’s nothing that will ruin your bridal gown shopping experience faster than coming straight in after a rolling out of bed. Once you've found the gown, we'll dress it up with bridal accessories including veils, shoes, and jewelry.

6. Your Love Story Won't be Perfect; neither will your big day.

News flash: the perfect dress doesn’t exist. The perfect wedding dress doesn’t exist. The perfect wedding day doesn’t exist. The perfect bride doesn’t exist. It’s an unrealistic fantasy that will only add unnecessary stress to your wedding journey. Embrace the idea that just because something isn’t perfect, doesn’t mean it’s not amazing and beautiful in its own way. Once you’ve settled with the idea that something is bound to go wrong on wedding day, you can release the burden of ‘perfection’ and start to really enjoy being in your bridal era.

7. The “One” doesn’t exist

On the note of releasing the idea of perfection, here’s another news flash: the elusive “one” doesn’t exist. There isn’t one wedding dress out there that’s perfect for you. There are likely several or even many dresses that could feel like “the one”. The caveat to trying on a plethora of wedding gowns is that: the more you try on, the more you could potentially envision for your walk down the aisle. Release the idea that there is one wedding dress out there that you’re fated to find. Focus on what makes you feel beautiful; what feels flattering on you; what makes you feel confident and special. Focus on what feels like magic in your soul, and what lights you up; what reflects who you are now. Focus on how you want to present yourself and what your love story will say. We tend to think your fiancé will think you light up their world when you walk down the aisle, no matter what you’re wearing!

8. Let yourself feel all the feels

Happy tears are welcomed and encouraged during this process. Throw out the logic, and let yourself be truly present in this moment. Be open-minded as you search for the gown that you'll walk into this new chapter in. Allow your body and intuition help guide you in your decision. Fixating on small details between this dress and that dress will ruin the magic. What’s most important is how you feel. If you quiet the room and listen closely, your gut will tell you everything you need to know.

9. Search in advance

When planning for a stress free timelines, it is suggested to shop for your bridal dress 10 months to one year in advance of your wedding date. With this timeline, even if everything goes wrong, you'll have your dress in time for the ceremony and reception. Allow for long lead times, budget extra weeks for customizations like adding sleeves or a made-to-measure fit. Schedule fittings two to three months before the wedding, and if weight fluctuations are on the docket, your last fitting should be no later than two weeks before the wedding.

10. Ignore Traditional Advice that, that Wedding Dress Quiz Probably Suggested

Tradition and fashion advice historically might suggest that a pear figure body should wear an a-line skirt to conceal the hips. It might say if you have an athletic figure, you shouldn't wear a mermaid silhouette. "Ivory isn't white" they'll say. "You have to wear a veil," "you won't be able to dance in that," "a plunging neckline isn't sophisticated," "A-line wedding dresses flatter most body types." We've heard it all. And we're asking you to tune out the noise. Elegance can be an attitude. Femininity isn't tied to lace or intricate detailing. Many brides opt for non-traditional styles including black sheer lace gowns or colorful gowns. Focus on creating a look that you love and feel beautiful in. You won't regret listening to your own voice.
